The Village Store in Yarraville required an extensive makeover to create a unique supermarket shopping experience. With the owner inspired by small, family-run supermarkets in the United States that were warm and friendly, the concept required dedicated spaces for a deli bar, groceries, fresh fruit and vegetables, artisan breads, local and imported wines and boutique beers – all the while having a cohesive aesthetic. Doherty Lynch responded to the owner’s brief with a raw industrial aesthetic and an eco bent. Existing materials were reused and architectural features retained, such as exposed industrial steel trusses, which were played up and painted white against a new charcoal-coloured ceiling. Brick walls were left un-rendered and painted in a charcoal colour to contrast with white columns. Concrete floors were exposed and polished. OSB recycled board was used in specialist joinery for storage, while existing storage, such as fruit boxes and wine racks, was reworked and resurfaced to fit with the new earthy vibe. A deli bar draws the eye and creates a focal point in the store with bespoke detailing and quirky elements – existing timber paneling is retained and strong, graphic, angular lines create a bold graphic statement with funky globe lighting signage. The result is a contemporary space that offers all things to all people while having an inviting interior that embraces a community spirit.
