Mill & Mia redefined clothes for children in the early-2003, and Fiona Lynch, of Doherty Lynch, collaborated on the design of the Melbourne retail outlet to redefine the look and feel of a contemporary children’s clothing store. It was important to create a simple, neutral palette as a backdrop to the clothing (for children aged 0-10) to ensure the clothing remained the heroes in the interior. However, elements of fun were introduced in a colourful pendant and rug. Flexibility was key to the display of the clothing, with Fiona designing a series of movable, stacking boxes and a simple hanging/display system. A custom-made table with cut-outs was a stand-out feature of the interior, providing not only a large display area, but also an interesting spot for children to play under. This design highlights Doherty Lynch’s ability to show restraint while injecting bespoke elements of playfulness into a design.
