The client brief was to restore an existing Victorian home and add new extension and second level to house a family of four. The home needed to be timeless, but individual. Four original rooms were retained in a major restructure to bring the home up-to-date with today’s family demands and the client’s specific needs. Linking the old with the new in a seamless way was important. A wide corridor leads from the existing to the new family living space. Floor to ceiling sliding doors frame the backyard and bring light into the new living space. A new ensuite and walk-in robe were integrated into the master bedroom in the original front room of the house. The upper level was designed to appear like it was suspended in the trees – the communal kids’ area particularly gives the feel of being in the trees. An existing oak tree helped to inform these spaces and how they were used. The material strategy was to use textured tiles, rich materials, pops of colour and feature lighting. Pierre & Charlotte ‘Hydro’ lights have been specified for the existing section and new to link the spaces. Whilst on a more playful side feature pendant lights have been selected for each of the bathrooms and at the base of the stair case.  Site constraints were the need to preserve the existing Victorian structure and integrate the new extension.
