The brief was to re-organise a kitchen, living, dining and internal courtyard in a revamp that remained true to the bones of a 1990s renovation, while creating a usable space for a family with pets. Bold joinery and horizontal lines define the new space where a restrained palette is punctuated with bold bursts of persimmon and charcoal, and quirky elements of bespoke detailing – such as cookie-cutter shaped handles and cut outs – highlight the owner’s sense of humour. The kitchen and courtyard are opened up with glazing, the former with a large window splashback and the latter with glazed sliding doors and louvres. A bluestone fireplace is a focal point and the hearth transitions into a step that leads to a study to connect the spaces.  American oak joinery and spotted gum floors add a warm timber aesthetic and offset playful design elements.
